General
- What kind of performances will be in the Fringe?
The basic concept of a fringe festival is that anybody can participate. Please join in and discover what is happening in your city! - Are Fringe Festival events free?
The Hakodate Fringe Festival 2013 takes no charge from artists and venues. Ticket monies may be collected by individual events. Please check our listings for full details. - Does the Hakodate Fringe Festival sell tickets?
Not at the moment. Each venue/artist is responsible for selling their own tickets. Please look at the contact details for each event. The Fringe Japan Project is looking into the mechanics of bringing free automated ticketing systems to Japan. - When and where is the "Puchi Fringe" Club?
The Puchi Fringe starts with a "Culture Day Countdown Party" from 10pm to 12pm on 2 Nov 2013. - Are there other fringe festivals in Japan?
We gratefully acknowledge the work of the people involved in other events in Japan. We could find three events, all focused primarily on single venues and on dance: the "Tokyo Fringe Festival", a "Kyoto Fringe Festival", and the "Fukuoka Dance Fringe Festival". Our work breaks new ground in bringing a wide-genre and town-wide venue fringe festival tradition to Japan for the first time. - Can I help?
Yes! Please see the "Support" tab, where you can get pdfs of our fliers for download, and much more.
Want To Put On A Show?
- Is participation in the fringe really free?
Yes. We have some private funding for 2012 & 2013, so we can offer free participation. Just register and we will include you in our advertising. One of our jobs in these years is to build a business model to establish whether a Fringe festival could exist as a business in Japan. - What will the Fringe Festival organisers do at my venue?
This year, we are running the simplest possible event, so in principle each artist and venue are responsible for all their on-site organisation. The Fringe Festival will be responsible for all the running and planning of the Puchi Fringe. The Fringe Festival will supply venues and artists with ample copies of the Fringe Guide, and also with some decorations. We hope that each venue can publicise the Fringe, so that all benefit. - Can we perform at just the "Puchi Fringe" club?
Yes. Please enter your details on the "Events" tab. We will contact you to discuss details of the dates and time of your Puchi Fringe performances. - What kind of events are allowed?
Anything is OK. One of the principles of fringe festivals is to not pick and choose what is allowed. If you are running an event during the Hakodate Fringe Festival period, just register and we will advertise for you. - What kind of venues are allowed?
Any venue is OK. Even swimming pools have been used as venues in some fringe festivals in Europe. Whether it's a party in your own house, or a large concert hall, we accept all proposals. - Can I just turn up at the Puchi Fringe and perform?
If you are happy without rehearsals, and if we have space in the program, then yes, we are very happy to accept "tobi-iri sanka"!
About Registering Venues and Events
- Why is the first deadline of July 5th so early?
This deadline is only for inclusion on the poster, which appears around town in summer. In most cases, the only event information we will be able to include on the poster will be event names and venue names. To be included in the Fringe Guide, which includes photos and full descriptions, give full details by the second deadline, which is Oct 1. - When is the latest date for registration?
We encourage early registration. To be included on the Hakodate Fringe 2013 poster, you need to register by July 5. If instead you register by the second deadline of Oct 1, you will be featured in the Fringe Guide, which is published in October. After the second deadline, we can only include your event in our online program, although you are welcome to perform at the Puchi Fringe, if we have space. - Why are there separate forms for Venue and Artist?
It often happens that one event is performed at different venues or that one venue hosts different events. For these cases, our system significantly reduces the load on the people registering the information. Also, we accept registration from events that have not yet found a venue and venues that want us to suggest artists. - What if my event has lots of artists?
The Fringe Guide (produced in autumn) will advertise based on lists of venues and lists of Events. If there are many artists in your event, you can provide information about each artist under "Artist Description". - I still can't understand the best way to register.
We will create a "Personal Page" for you based on whatever information you register. We recommend trying out the input form. We will work with you to complete your information so that your event is described in the best possible way.
